13 June 2017 – Brussels
A delegation from the Hindu Forum of Belgium (HFB) met with Minister of Justice Koen Geens at his cabinet offices on Boulevard de Waterloo to discuss the formal recognition of Hinduism in Belgium.
The meeting, which brought together representatives from diverse Hindu communities across the country, marked a significant step forward in our journey toward official recognition.
Minister Geens expressed his personal support for Hinduism being accepted as a bona fide religion in Belgium, acknowledging the peaceful contribution of Hindu citizens to Belgian society. Having visited India himself, the Minister spoke warmly of his admiration for the character of Mahatma Gandhi.
During the meeting, Mr. Bernard Dufour, advisor to the Minister, outlined the process ahead. He confirmed that the HFB has been exemplary in providing all required documentation—a sentiment echoed by the Minister himself. A draft proposal for subsidies to establish an HFB secretariat will be presented to Parliament in autumn 2017, with funding potentially available by March 2018.
The Minister recognised the importance of Hindu pastoral care in hospitals and prisons, as well as the need for religious education. He also graciously agreed to assist in arranging a potential audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen ahead of their planned visit to India, and welcomed our request for a letter of support for the upcoming Janmashtami Festival.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Minister Geens and Mr. Dufour for this constructive dialogue. The Hindu Forum of Belgium remains committed to representing all dharmic communities as we work together toward this historic milestone.
The HFB delegation included Martin Gurvich, Herman Janssens, Anil Chunivan, Ravinder Singh, Rabindra Man Shreshtha, Rita Bouwman, Kishore Shah, Bhavana Bhansali Ashar, Arikirushnan Jeyarajah, Shashi Devani, and Malati devi dasi.
